Try three questions

Three questions from the Canada (Manitoba) bank, as you'll see them in the app.

  1. You are driving through a free public parking lot. How do traffic laws treat you?

    1. Only the rules for pedestrians apply, and the rules for drivers do not apply there
    2. Traffic law does not apply to you at all, because a parking lot is private property
    3. You have the same rights and duties, and the same penalties, as on a highway
    4. Only the speed limits apply, since there are usually no marked lanes in a parking lot
    Show the answer

Answer: You have the same rights and duties, and the same penalties, as on a highway

A person operating a motor vehicle in a place designed and primarily used for parking, including its passageways, has the same rights and duties and is subject to the same penalties as on a highway (The Highway Traffic Act, s. 236(1)). Where a charge is made for parking, s. 236(2) still applies a list of offences such as careless driving and seat belt rules.

  2. A winter maintenance vehicle is working in an intersection you are approaching. What must you do?

    1. Enter immediately, since snow plows have no priority in an intersection or elsewhere
    2. Drive around the plow on the shoulder, then carry on through the intersection
    3. Sound the horn repeatedly until the plow moves out of the intersection for you
    4. Slow or stop if needed, and enter only if safe and without interfering with its work
    Show the answer

Answer: Slow or stop if needed, and enter only if safe and without interfering with its work

When approaching a winter maintenance vehicle working at or within an intersection, a driver must slow or stop if necessary and must not enter the intersection unless doing so is safe and does not interfere with the activities (The Highway Traffic Act, s. 109.2(6)).

  3. Which statement about a moped on a highway is correct?

    1. One passenger may be carried if belted
    2. One passenger is allowed in daylight only
    3. Two passengers are allowed if both wear helmets
    4. No passenger may be carried
    Show the answer

Answer: No passenger may be carried

No person shall carry or transport a passenger on a moped while it is operated on a highway (The Highway Traffic Act, s. 184(6)). A moped also must be operated as close as practicable to the right edge or kerb in most cases (s. 111).
